Tips for Job Interviews
One of the most intimidating portions of the process of finding a job is without a doubt the job interview. This has to do with the fact that job seekers are trying to put their best foot forward in order to succeed in finding a job they have likely spent a great deal of time searching to find.
In order to make sure your next job interview is as successful as possible, here are some tips to keep in mind during the process:
- Be Prepared-It is pretty common knowledge that during a job interview, you will be asked questions regarding your work experience, your skill level, industry experience, and even what you know about the particular company. It is pretty likely you will also be asked specific questions regarding how you would handle particular situations that came up at work. Be prepared for these situations by practicing.
Spend time researching common job interview questions and have a family member or friend ask you those questions just to help you get comfortable answering questions on your feet. If you do not know much about the company you are currently interviewing with, take the time to research what they do and what your position would entail. This will help you to more effectively answer questions during the interview process.
- Dress for Success-Although you may want to believe that first impressions will not be the only thing an interviewer will look at, the first impression you make will likely be a lasting one in a job interview. Remember that you only have a small amount of time in the interview to make a good impression, so you want it to be the best impression possible. This means showing that you care a great deal about the job interview by dressing well.
- Be Prompt-Being on time for an interview says a great deal about your character, and it also says a lot about the way you feel about the job interview altogether. If you show up late it sends the message that this particular company is not important enough for your time. This likely won't lead to a job. If something comes up that won't permit you to be on time, have the courtesy to call and inform the interviewer that you will be late or will need to reschedule. This will show your respect for the organization you are interviewing with.
- Stay Calm-Almost more important than being prepared is staying calm. Know before going into the interview that it is likely you will run into a few snags because of questions you do not know how to answer. That is perfectly alright. Keep in mind, as well, that your interviewers are human and they have been through the same process themselves at some point. If you notice you start to get nervous, take a minute to take a deep breath, and think about what you want to say before you actually say it.
